Six Students From Our Department Receive the 2024 Founders Award of Excellence!

We would like to congratulate our winners of the 2024 Founders Award of Excellence, the highest honor given at the annual Honors Convocation Ceremony! Pictured from left to right: Anna Zuniga, Junior in the IME program, David Gardiner, Co-Terminal M.Eng. student in the SETM program, Valerie Bubel, Senior in the IME program. Not pictured are Vivian Rost-Nasshan, Senior in the IME program, Abby Coscia, Senior in the IME program, and Stephen Feldman, Senior in the IME program.

This year there were 65 recipients, 25 of these from the School of Engineering. With six winners from our department, we were well represented! The Founders Award of Excellence was established in 1994 to honor students who embody the qualities of creativity, discovery, leadership, and the values of pride and responsibility at Rensselaer.

Stewart Chair and Professor in H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He is also a member of National Academy of Engineering.

Students participating in Six Sigma Green Belt and Healthcare Green Belt

This past weekend, the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in collaboration with the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), organized a “Six Sigma Green Belt (GB) and Healthcare Green Belt (HC-GB) Dual Certification” course. The event, held from Friday, September 20th to Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, was open to RPI students, faculty, alumni, and community members.

PREFACE Students visit with ISE Dept. faculty

Meet the future leaders of our society!  "Since 1978, PREFACE has provided a pre-college introduction to the different types of engineering, allowing students to understand what engineers do and what it takes to become an engineer. PREFACE students are exposed to today’s global challenges and learn to use engineering design and manufacturing processes to develop possible solutions."

Dr. Kristen Schell and Dr. Mario Arrieta-Prieto

ISE Research Scientist Kristen Schell and ISE PhD graduate Mario Arrieta-Prieto were awarded the International Institute of Forecasters-SAS 2023 Methodology Award for their work on improving wind power forecasting with the accurate characterization of circular variables. They presented their research at the International Symposium of Forecasting this July in Dijon, France.

Dr. Azita Hirsa and Students

How can summer classes be educational and entertaining at the School of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute? Students in one of Dr. Azita Hirsa's Summer courses, STSO4100-05 Professional Development - Technical Issues and Solutions, recently held their class at Pat's Barn where they discussed an engineering ethics story, effective communication, and more. Awesome undergraduate students (next generation of change makers), tasty food, and lively discussion! It was a great way to start wrapping up the summer session.

Omni Channel Services

Dr. Jennifer Pazour and PhD Student Joyjit Bhowmick’s joint research was recently featured in MHI Solutions (Material Handling Industry) magazine. The article is entitled Omnichannel Services: A logistical challenge for retailers and business opportunity for the material handling industry. A link to the article is here.

Harnessing Vibrations: RPI-Engineered Material Generates Electricity from Unexpected Source

Imagine tires that charge a vehicle as it drives, streetlights powered by the rumble of traffic, or skyscrapers that generate electricity as the buildings naturally sway and shudder. These energy innovations could be possible thanks to researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developing environmentally friendly materials that produce electricity when compressed or exposed to vibrations.

Nick Pinchuk ’68, ’69G, an accomplished engineer, industry leader, and inspiring mentor, has devoted his career to the betterment of American manufacturing and the millions of workers who keep it running. In recognition of his work, his impact, and his service to the country, Pinchuk is receiving the Davies Medal for Engineering Achievement, the highest honor awarded by the School of Engineering at his alma mater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

RPI Space Science and Technology Day Lifts Off

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has long been at the forefront of space exploration and discovery. On September 30, that storied legacy met the future at RPI’s Space Science and Technology Day.As part of RPI’s yearlong Bicentennial celebration honoring RPI’s rich history and the promising years to come, this event invited the Capital Region community to hear from alumni, students, and researchers propelling humanity’s space endeavors.

RPI’s Mercer XLab Is Re-Engineering STEM Education

Many engineers share a similar origin story: An early passion for taking things apart, seeing how they worked, then making them better — or transforming them into something brand new. At RPI, that drive to learn, tinker, and invent now has a headquarters in the Douglas A. Mercer ’77 Innovation and Exploration Laboratory, which officially re-opened its doors on September 25 after a year-long renovation.
