New Bioimaging Technique Is Fast and Economical

A new approach to optical imaging makes it possible to quickly and economically monitor multiple molecular interactions in a large area of living tissue – such as an organ or a small animal; technology that could have applications in medical diagnosis, guided surgery, or pre-clinical drug testing. The method, which is detailed in Nature Photonics, is capable of simultaneously tracking 16 colors of spatially linked information over an area spanning several centimeters, and can capture interactions that occur in mere billionths of a second.

Welcome Sérgio Pequito to ISE Department

The ISE Department welcomes Dr. Sérgio Pequito as an Assistant Professor starting on August 1. Sérgio obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and InstitutoSuperior Técnico, through the CMU-Portugal program, in 2014. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the Instituto SuperiorTécnico in 2007 and 2009, respectively.  He was a postdoctoral researcher in General Robotics, Automation, Sensing & Perception Laboratory (GRASP lab) at University of Pennsylvania from 2014-2017.

Rensselaer Team Takes Third Place at ASME Design Competition

Troy, N.Y. A team of Rensselaer students earned third place at the ASME Student Manufacturing Design Competition at the Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference at the University of Southern California. The students designed “Invisbell,” a bike bell that mounts on either side of a bicycle’s handlebars to accommodate both left- and right-handed riders.

Bacteria Make Natural Pigment From Simple Sugar

Nature makes the vibrant pigments manufacturers want for foods and cosmetics, but getting them from plants to the products we buy is so difficult that many manufacturers rely on artificial colors. Now, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have shown that four strains of E. coli bacteria working together can convert sugar into the natural red anthocyanin pigment found in strawberries, opening the door to economical natural colors for industrial applications.

The US Patent Number 9,655,564 titled Use of machine learning for classification of magneto cardiograms was granted on May 23, 2017 to Dr. Karsten Sternickel of Germany, Prof. Mark Embrechts of RPI (ISY) and Prof. Boleslaw Szymanski of RPI (NeST).  The patent is for the use of machine learning for pattern recognition in magnetocardiography (MCG). Magnetocardiography measures magnetic fields emitted by the electrophysiological activity of the heart and does not involve any radiation.

Building a STEM Pipeline

Troy, N.Y. – This summer, Capital Region middle-school students eager to participate in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning will have an opportunity once again to explore the STEM fields at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. For the 12th consecutive year, the ExxonMobil Foundation and Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr., the first African-American to walk in space, will sponsor summer science camps at colleges across the country.
