ISE Seminar 3pm on Thursday September 17 will be given by Mark Lewis, Professor and Associate Dean of Diversity and Faculty Development, School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, Cornell University. The title of the talk is Dynamic Resource Management Policies for Parallel Queues with a Shared Pool of Servers Location: JEC 3117. Abstract: We consider the problem of how servers can be dynamically allocated in a system with parallel queues serving multiple job types. The system serves demand streams that differ based on arrival rates, service requirements and holding costs. A central controller has access to a fixed number of servers and must decide how many servers to use and where to allocate their effort. In addition to the holding costs, the system incurs usage cost based on the number of servers used. We give a characterization of the optimal allocation policy and suggest useful heuristics. Bio: Professor Lewis received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Political Science from Eckerd College in 1992, his Master's degree in Theoretical Statistics from Florida State University in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. After receiving his doctorate, Lewis spent a year at the University of British Columbia as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Operations Excellence. He joined Cornell as an Associate Professor in 2005 after teaching Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan.
